The Armor of God, Part 2: The Belt of Truth

Belt of Truth

Ephesians 6:14 begins with:

"Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth..."

We are in a blog series that takes a very practical look at the armor of God. If you missed last week's blog, I encourage you to read it to see how the previous verses set the stage for why this spiritual armor is important.

Paul begins with the belt of Truth because that was the very first piece of armor the Roman soldier put on when preparing for battle. The belt was the foundation of his armor, holding everything together and still allowing him freedom of movement.

In the same way, the Truth is the foundation for believers. But not just any truth!

Our culture increasingly promotes a version of truth that is subjective—"your truth" vs. "my truth." But for the Christian, Truth isn’t something we get to redefine or mold to fit our feelings or culture. Truth is a Person. Jesus said:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life.” John 14:6

You see, God's Truth is made clear in His Word—Truth about His character, His plan of salvation, His plan for the future, how we are to live and treat others, what is righteous and what is sinful. It has become socially acceptable for people to create a false truth, then expect everyone to accept it or risk being ridiculed or canceled. The world's view of truth should never replace God's Truth in the life of the believer.

Here are a few verses that stand out to me about God's Truth:

  • 2 Timothy 2:15
“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.”

  • Psalm 25:5
“Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.”

  • Psalm 86:11
“Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name.”

  • Ephesians 4:15
“Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ.”

Where are you being challenged to hold on to God's Truth instead of compromising to accept the world's version of truth?

Take a moment to honestly reflect. Ask the Lord to show you where your belt of Truth may be loose, and invite Him to strengthen you with the unwavering Truth of His Word.
