The Armor of God, Part 7: The Sword of the Spirit
Nov 18, 2025
Ephesians 6:17b - "and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word God,"
As we wrap up our journey through the Armor of God, we see a unique piece of spiritual equipment—the one piece or armor that is both offensive and defensive. The Sword of the Spirit isn’t just a symbol. It’s a living, active tool placed in our hands by God Himself—His Word!
A Soldier’s Sword
The Roman soldiers carried swords commonly sharpened on both edges to make it easier to penetrate effectively and subdue the enemy. Yes, that sounds pretty gruesome, but we are talking about battle! These soldiers didn't wait until they stepped on the battlefield to figure out how to use their swords. They trained hard and often to learn to use them most effectively.
Training With the Word
Paul is very clear that our sword is God’s Word. We can fight the enemy more effectively when we are trained well and know God’s Word! We must study the Bible prayerfully, with intentionality and consistency. We are to wield our sword with truth, compassion, and love—not condemnation and judgement.
Hebrews 4:12 is often quoted for its first line:
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword.”
But the verse continues with a deeper reality:
“…piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
We cannot change the heart of someone else, or even our own, but God’s Word can and does. It convicts, heals, exposes, restores, and divides truth from lies. Our job is to train well… then let the Sword do its work.
Prayer: Our Constant Companion
Paul concludes the Armor of God passage with a final instruction:
“…praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.” — Ephesians 6:18
Supplication simply means requests or petitions. After putting on the whole armor, Paul is telling us to constantly lift our prayers and requests to Him, praying with the power of the Holy Spirit.
We Do Not Battle Alone
Remember, as women of God, we are not meant to battle alone. We take up the whole armor of God together so we can stand firm against the enemy—not each other.
